Role guide, 2026

What is a growth engineer?

Two job titles, one family, and a fair amount of confusion. Here is what growth engineers and GTM engineers actually do, what the job posts ask for, and what the roles pay, taken from public sources and dated.

The short answer

Code that is measured in revenue.

A growth engineer is a software engineer whose work is judged by what it earns rather than what it adds. The tidiest definition comes from The Pragmatic Engineer, written with Alexey Komissarouk, who teaches growth engineering at Reforge: "the writing of code to make a company money".

Their other distinction is the useful one. Product teams ship to build something that lasts. Growth teams ship to learn, and accept less durable code in exchange for speed.

A GTM engineer builds the machinery around sales instead: the data, scoring, signals, outbound and CRM work that decides who a revenue team talks to and when. Clay says it coined the title in 2023. OneGTM's definition separates it from RevOps, which owns process and reporting, and from SDRs, who do the outreach the GTM engineer's systems prepare.

The line is blurring. a16z runs one fellowship for growth engineers, AI-native GTM leaders and agent builders together. A New York company's April 2026 post titled Growth Engineer describes pipeline and sales tooling. And Peec AI in Berlin, hiring an outward-facing growth engineer for acquisition next to the product-side one it already has, notes that the same work goes by at least four names.

The work

What the job posts describe.

From ten live posts at companies including Granola, n8n, Peec AI, Clay, Taktile, Adyen, Vanta and incident.io, read on 29 September 2026.

Growth engineer
  • Run experiments end to end: hypothesis, build, measure, then ship or kill
  • Build and improve signup, onboarding, activation and retention flows
  • Own upgrade flows, pricing pages, paywalls and usage limits
  • Build the testing tools: feature flags, exposure logging, attribution
  • Own acquisition pages: landing pages, programmatic pages, technical SEO
  • Make the numbers trustworthy: event design and funnel definitions agreed before building
GTM engineer
  • Build the market list, enrich it, and score fit and intent
  • Watch for signals such as hiring, funding and job changes, and alert sales
  • Run outbound infrastructure: sequences, deliverability, reply routing
  • Own the CRM data model, lead routing and data quality
  • Connect enrichment, CRM and warehouse through APIs and webhooks
  • Build AI tools for sellers: account research, call briefs, drafted outreach

Skills

What employers ask for.

Growth engineer posts ask for production full-stack engineering, usually five years or more, plus experiment design, SQL, product judgment and the ability to ship without a product manager. One asks for fluency with AI coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor.

GTM engineer posts lean on systems and commercial sense: CRM data modelling, APIs and automation platforms, language model APIs and agents, and a working grasp of B2B sales. Bloomberry's analysis found posts asking for about four years of experience on average.

Pay

What the roles pay in 2026.

Surveys and salary sites cover GTM engineers. Nobody publishes a benchmark for growth engineers as a title yet, since most salary sites file them as software engineers, so for that role the job posts are the evidence.

Read the job-post rows with care. Each is one employer's advertised range for one role, mostly at well-funded AI and software companies in places with pay transparency laws, so they sit above the wider market. The same survey behind the first row found that 49 percent of respondents receive no performance bonus.

We found no Netherlands salary data with a real sample. The closest are n8n's band for Western and Northern Europe and the Benelux estimate above. Adyen, the Amsterdam payments company, is hiring its GTM engineer in New York.

Freelance and day rates are the least reliable numbers in this field. The State of GTME survey puts GTM engineering agency retainers at about USD 2,000 to more than 33,000 a month. The individual day rates we found were proxies or had no stated method, so we have left them out.

Demand

Why everyone is suddenly hiring one.

Bloomberry counted GTM engineering job posts up 205 percent year on year across the first nine months of 2025. TechTree counted 492 people working as GTM engineers in Europe in June 2026, at 402 employers in 29 countries.

The reason is the same one behind this whole corner of the market. Enrichment, signals and language models got good enough that one person who can wire them together does work that used to need a small team. What has not got cheaper is the judgment about what to build and for whom.

Your options

Hire, go fractional, or bring in a studio.

Hire full timeWhen there is a steady stream of work and someone to manage it. Budget for the ranges above, and for the four or so years of experience most posts ask for.
Go fractionalWhen you need two to four specific things built and then maintained. One consultancy's rule of thumb: fix RevOps basics first below USD 3M in annual revenue, go fractional between 3M and 10M, and hire above that.
Bring in a studioWhen you need the first version designed and built across several systems, with judgment on what to build, then handed over. It also gives a future hire a working system to run instead of a blank page. How our studio works.

Questions

Questions about the role.

What does a growth engineer do?
A growth engineer writes code whose job is to make the company money: signup and onboarding flows, activation, pricing and upgrade paths, landing pages and the experiments that test them, plus the testing and measurement tools behind those experiments. The role usually sits in product or engineering, or under a head of growth.
What is the difference between a growth engineer and a GTM engineer?
A growth engineer works in the product and website and is measured on activation, retention, conversion and revenue. A GTM engineer builds the machinery around sales, such as data, enrichment, scoring, signals, outbound and the CRM, and is measured on pipeline, meetings and hours saved. The titles overlap more every year.
How much does a GTM engineer earn?
In the US, the State of GTME 2026 survey reports total pay from USD 65,000 to more than 250,000, and Levels.fyi shows a median of USD 156,000 from 27 submissions. Posted ranges at well-funded New York companies mostly sit between USD 130,000 and 230,000 base. For the Benelux, the one estimate we found puts base pay at EUR 48,000 for juniors, rising to EUR 145,000 for leads.
How much does a growth engineer earn in Europe?
No salary survey covers the title yet, so job posts are the best evidence. n8n advertises EUR 114,300 to 149,300 plus equity for a senior growth engineer in Western and Northern Europe, a band that covers the Netherlands, and Peec AI in Berlin EUR 100,000 to 130,000 plus equity.
What skills does a GTM engineer need?
In the 1,000 posts Bloomberry analysed, Clay was the most requested tool, followed by HubSpot (52 percent), Outreach (49 percent) and Salesforce (45 percent). Python and SQL each appeared in 38 percent. Posts asked for about four years of experience on average, plus a working grasp of B2B sales and which signals matter.
Should a founder-led company hire a growth engineer or a GTM engineer?
If growth depends on people signing up and upgrading in the product, a growth engineer. If it depends on a sales team reaching the right accounts, a GTM engineer. Most founder-led B2B companies need the second first. If you would rather have the first version built and handed over before you hire, that is what a studio does.
